As Asian private equity and venture capital funds seek exposure to investors around the globe, questions arise about how best to raise capital in the key investor markets: the US, Europe and Asia. This breakfast briefing will bring together Clifford Chance's legal experts from New York, London, Luxembourg, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia to provide an update on fundraising in those markets, including with respect to regulatory restrictions, structuring requirements and related tax considerations.


Kai Schneider
Partner, Clifford Chance

Kai is the managing partner of the Singapore office and head of the Funds and Investment Management group in Singapore. He is a US-qualified lawyer with over 15 years of specialist experience in the funds sector and advises clients on the formation of and investment in a wide variety of private funds. He regularly advises sponsors on accessing the US market as well as on regional licensing and securities laws. Kai is a member of the Advocacy Subcommittee of the Singapore Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (SVCA) and the Singapore Regulatory Committee of the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA). He is recognised as an Up-and-Coming Partner and ranked in Chambers Global and Legal 500 since 2012.

Matt Feldmann
Partner, Clifford Chance

Matt is a partner in Clifford Chance's Hong Kong office in the Funds and Investment Management group. Based in Hong Kong since 1998, Matt has extensive experience establishing private investment funds; advising on fund structuring and legal and regulatory aspects. Matt has worked on some of the largest fund launches in the region. He also acts for institutional investors on their investments in funds and separate accounts. Matt co-heads the firm's Real Estate Sector in Asia-Pacific and heads the firm's global Hedge Fund Sub-Sector.   

Owen Lysak
Partner, Clifford Chance

Owen is a partner in the financial regulatory group in London, specialising in funds regulation, establishment and marketing, and advising on mergers and acquisitions in the financial sector. He also advises on regulatory capital, securities regulation and issues associated with regulatory change, such as Brexit. During his time with the Firm, Owen has been seconded to Goldman Sachs, Citibank and the UK Financial Services Authority. Owen was also previously named in Private Equity International's Private Funds Management "30 Under 40 Lawyers" list for 2015. 

Anthony Stewart

Anthony Stewart is a partner in the Tax Group. He specialises in taxation with a particular focus on investment funds and international tax structuring. Anthony is a member of the British Venture Capital Association Tax Committee.

Paul Van den Abeele
Partner, Clifford Chance

Paul Van den Abeele is a partner in the Luxembourg Funds and Investment Management Group. He specialises in international fund structuring, focusing on alternative strategies. He advises financial institutions, investment firms and asset managers across Europe, the US and Asia in relation to legal and regulatory matters of the structuring, implementation, management and servicing of investment funds, with a particular emphasis on real estate, private equity, infrastructure and debt funds. He was named among 'the 30 most influential private equity lawyers under the age of 40' by private funds magazine.

Jeff Berman
Partner, Clifford Chance

Jeff Berman is a partner in the US Financial Services Regulatory Group, with a practice that focuses on regulatory matters involving US and non-US investment funds, asset managers, banking organizations and bank holding companies, and includes private equity and hedge fund formation and financial institutions M&A. Jeff has close to 30 years’ experience with US bank and securities regulation. He also advises clients on the strategic impact of regulatory reform efforts since the global financial crisis.

Kane Barnett
Counsel, Clifford Chance

Kane has over 16 years’ experience, advising clients on private and public funds, as well as mergers and acquisitions (including public takeovers and schemes of arrangement), fund raisings and restructures in Australia and Asia. He has particular experience in advising funds and other financial investors marketing, raising capital and investing in Australia. Kane has also assisted many clients with their Australian financial services licence applications and advised on the Australian regulatory regime.
